Please Help Save NYAAF for 2010

nj lottery

Dear friends and supporters,

It has been a tough year for the New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF). The nationwide economic downturn and upsurge in unemployed and uninsured Americans have lead to a rise in demand for our services. More and more we are getting calls not just from clinics, but directly from women asking for help to pay for an abortion.

This increase in the numbers and types of requests we receive means we are reaching a wider population of women and families than ever before. It also requires more time and effort. Our all-volunteer board is stretched thin responding to requests for funding, referring women to clinics that can serve them and negotiating with those clinics to provide the most timely and affordable services possible.

The women NYAAF serves are ones who might otherwise slip through the cracks, including those who make just a little too much to qualify for public assistance, who do not qualify due to immigration status, who live in states that do not help cover the cost of abortion, or who face emergency situations that do not leave them enough time to apply for government help.

The emergencies, of course, are the most expensive. Last month, we helped a fifteen-year-old rape victim pay for a procedure that required hospital treatment. Arranging for her care took more than ten phone calls, countless emails and hours of negotiation. We contacted every known source of abortion funding for which this young woman qualified and every time heard the same message: we are out of money, please call back later. In the end, the doctor involved in the case waived the usual fee and NYAAF agreed to pay the remaining hospital costs: $4000. We were able to make that pledge and save that young woman?s life because we had the funds on hand and a mechanism in place to get them quickly to where they needed to go. But that pledge nearly drained our remaining 2009 budget, and in order to meet the demand for our assistance in 2010, we need your help.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to NYAAF to help us face the challenges of the coming year. The obstacles are only increasing: We lost a hero this year, Dr. George Tiller, whose murder in August has left us with few places to turn when a woman comes to us in need of a later-term procedure. On top of this, the ongoing healthcare debate in Congress may carry with it new restrictions on abortion funding, thus increasing the need for our fund. NYAAF is an all-volunteer organization, which means that 100% of your tax-deductible contribution goes directly to women in need. Even small amounts can make a huge difference in the lives of the women we help. Give online now at www.nyaaf.org or send a check to:

Weekly Update

Just a quick update from last week’s intake duty. Think y’all might be interested in hearing the kinds of cases we deal with on a weekly basis.

It was a busy week. We funded 5 women’s procedures, but fielded many more calls and more are in the works for this week.

One that stands out:
Tia from Philadelphia. A 26-year-old mother of two, she emailed us on Tuesday, 9 weeks pregnant and desperate for help. She is on welfare and has Medicaid, but because she happens to be from Pennsylvania–a state that does not allow any state Medicaid funding to be used for abortions–she may as well have been uninsured. She wanted to come to NYC for the procedure, because the cost is substantially less here than many other cities–even when you take into account travel costs to get here. Guess it’s a supply and demand thing–so many providers here they have to compete by lowering the cost.

While we answer email, it’s easiest to deal with clients and clinics by phone to ensure quick results, so I asked Tia to call me. She responded to my email with apologies, saying that she was so poor she had no long distance calling on her phone, and asked that I call her if at all possible.

Tia had saved $100, and the cost of the procedure was $425. I called the clinic and was able to negotiate a $50 dollar discount. That left $275, but given all the other cases this week and our fiscal situtation, I took the extra step to call the abortion fund in Philly and they agreed to pledge $50 as well, given that she was a Philly resident. So NYAAF pledged $225 for Tia and she was able to get to NYC and had her procedure on Friday.

Tia was exceedingly grateful to us for the assistance, and I am in turn exceedingly grateful to all of YOU–our supporters and donors who make it possible for us to help women in need!!!

All for now,
Julia

Raise $10,000 to keep NYAAF alive

Dear friends,We need your help—NYAAF is going broke. This week, the New York Abortion Fund (NYAAF) account officially dropped below $5,000. And that was before we got a call from a women in need of over $2000 for an urgent procedure.

In order to ensure that we can continue to operate the fund over the next weeks and months, we are setting an emergency fundraising goal of $10,000.

Here’s what you can do to help:

1. DONATE NOW via Facebook
2. Ask your friends to DONATE NOW
3. Share the causes.com/nyaaf link FAR and WIDE via Facebook, email and any/all other technologies at your disposal
4. Again, that’s http://www.causes.com/nyaaf
5. Volunteer to host a NYAAF fundraiser in your home

Thank you for your support. We have never turned a woman away and don’t plan to start now.

As you may know, we are getting more calls for our assistance than ever. We believe the uptick in demand for our services is due to both the rough economy and our increased visibility as more women and clinics become aware of NYAAF.

Please help us help the women who turn to us for support.

Literary Night in Honor of NYAAF a Big Success

THANKS to everyone who came out to the Other Means reading at The Flying Saucer cafe in Brooklyn last night. We raised very respectable $331 from the over 50 spectators packed into the coffee shop.

Every one of those dollars will go directly toward helping a women pay for an abortion she needs but cannot afford. Thank you for your support and for coming out to learn more and join the discussion on the politics of abortion and women’s access to safe and affordable health care.EXTRA SPECIAL THANKS to authors Kathryn Joyce, Jennifer Baumgardner and Michelle Goldberg for reading from their important works and selecting NYAAF as the cause to benefit from the event. If you missed the event, be sure to check out the books:Abortion and Life
